The Diploma in Creative Industries consists of 96 credit points and is normally completed in one year of full-time study.
Students who successfully graduate from the diploma will gain guaranteed entry into the second year of QUT’s Bachelor of Design (International) with the choice of majors in:
- experience design
- fashion design
- industrial design
- strategic design
- visual communication.
This course combines the standard three-year Bachelor of Design degree with one year of overseas studies.

Upon entry to the bachelor degree course, you will be eligible for 96 credit points (one year) of advanced standing (credited).
Diploma in Creative Industries
Students complete eight units (96 credit points) comprising of seven discipline specific units and one academic skills unit.
You must complete all 96 credit points to meet the course requirements and once you have successfully completed the diploma, you will be automatically offered a place in the Bachelor of Design - International. Your diploma units will be credited into your degree.
Bachelor of Design - International
The Bachelor of Design - International structure consists of 288 credit points consisting of:
- Core Introductory units - 72 credit points
- A Design major - 108 credit points
- QUT You - 24 credit points
- Complementary studies - 180 credit points, made up of:
- International exchange year - 96 credit points
- Design specialisation units - 36 credit points
- A minor, or a combination of design specialisation units and electives (unit options) - 48 credit points.
Upon completion of the Diploma in Creative Industries, you will complete the remaining 288 credit points of the Bachelor of Design - International.

Assumed knowledge
Before you start this course, we assume you have sound knowledge of the subject/s listed below. If you don't have the subject knowledge, you can still apply for the course but we strongly encourage you to undertake bridging studies to gain the knowledge:
- English, or Literature, or English and Literature Extension, or English as an Additional Language (Units 3 & 4, C)
Overseas qualifications
QUT will consider equivalent overseas qualifications for admissions purposes. If you have tertiary qualifications from countries where English is not the standard language of instruction, you must provide evidence of English language proficiency.
English language proficiency
We require students to demonstrate they can speak, write, read and comprehend academic English to a specified standard.
Our English proficiency requirements for this course are:
- IELTS Academic / One Skill Retake: 6.0 or better overall with no subscore below 6.0.
- Cambridge C1 Advanced: 164 or better overall with listening and reading subscores of 163 or better, a writing subscore of 170 or better, and a speaking subscore of 179 or better.
- LANGUAGECERT Academic (LCA): 61 or better overall with a listening subscore of 57 or better, a reading subscore of 60 or better, a writing subscore of 64 or better, and a speaking subscore of 70 or better.
- Michigan English Test (MET): 53 or better overall with a listening subscore of 56 or better, a reading subscore of 55 or better, a writing subscore of 57 or better, and a speaking subscore of 48 or better.
- PTE Academic: 50 or better overall with listening and reading subscores of 50 or better, a writing subscore of 51 or better, and a speaking subscore of 54 or better.
- TOEFL iBT Australia Test (120 scale): 71 or better overall with listening and reading sub-scores of 16 or better, and writing and speaking sub-scores of 19 or better.
The test must have been completed within 2 years prior to the proposed course start month.
QTAC will notify you if you are required to demonstrate your English proficiency via an approved test.
Offer guarantee
If you achieve an ATAR or selection rank of 60.00 or higher (including any adjustments) and satisfy all other admission requirements, you are guaranteed an offer for this course in the Semester 1 offer rounds, up to the main offer round in mid-January.
VET guarantee
If you have completed an AQF certificate III, certificate IV, diploma or higher, and satisfy all other admission requirements, you are guaranteed an offer for this course in the Semester 1 offer rounds, up to the main offer round in mid-January.
Advanced standing
If you have prior studies or work experience, you may be eligible for advanced standing (credit). You can apply for advanced standing once you've been accepted to QUT. If you're in your first semester of study, you must apply for advanced standing within 10 days of receiving your offer.

You can defer your offer and postpone the start of your course for one year.
