Why choose this course?
The screen industry is undergoing unprecedented transformation. Streaming services, global co-productions, and digital platforms have changed how stories are created, distributed, and consumed. In this major, you’ll explore these shifts from every angle - economic, cultural, and technological, so you can anticipate trends and lead innovation.
You’ll develop expertise in screen business models, audience research, and creative entrepreneurship, while gaining practical skills in production management and professional practice. By graduation, you’ll be ready to navigate complex industry challenges and seize opportunities in a global marketplace.
Real-world learning
This major is designed to bridge the gap between theory and practice, giving you experiences that reflect the realities of today’s screen industries. From your first year, you’ll engage in activities that simulate professional environments including developing proposals, pitching ideas, and analysing industry case studies. These experiences build your confidence and prepare you for the fast-paced world of film, television, and digital entertainment.
You’ll have opportunities for work-integrated learning, including internships with production companies, media agencies, and cultural organisations. Past students have collaborated on projects for film festivals, streaming platforms, and creative studios, gaining valuable insights and professional networks before graduation.
For those seeking global exposure, study tours and industry intensives provide firsthand experience of international screen markets and emerging trends. Previous study tours have taken students to South-East Asia, Europe and the US, which is great if you’re interested in seeing how media and communication work in different parts of the world.
Assessment tasks are designed to mirror industry practice. Early in the degree, you’ll complete short reports and case analyses that develop your ability to evaluate business models and cultural dynamics. Later, you’ll tackle group pitching projects, where you’ll present strategic solutions for real-world challenges in screen industries.
Real-world learning
Have the option to gain industry experience through internships and work placements in a multitude of organisations. Students have completed placements with Network Ten, Brisbane Festival, Hyperplex Cinemas and plenty more.
You will learn from teaching staff who both work in the field and are at the cutting-edge of research in media and communication. If a modern trend emerges in communications, you’ll understand what it means, and how it fits into the broader fabric of the media landscape.
Learn how to inspire action, make change and influence decisions. You will build the critical thinking skills to develop ethical and socially responsible communication strategies that shape industries, communities and cultures for a more just and inclusive world.
Explore this course
Your studies will begin by exploring the cultural and industrial forces that shape entertainment and media. You’ll uncover how stories circulate across platforms, how audiences engage with content, and how global trends influence local markets. This foundation will help you understand the dynamics of creative industries and the role they play in shaping identity, society, and cultural exchange.
As you progress, you’ll dive deeper into the business and operational side of creative projects. You’ll learn how productions are planned and managed, from budgeting and scheduling to risk assessment and compliance with industry standards.
In your final stages, you’ll tackle advanced topics that challenge you to think critically about the future of media and screen industries. You’ll examine emerging technologies, shifting audience behaviours, and global policy debates, applying your knowledge to real-world scenarios.
Flexible course options
Pairing screen industries with a communication second major gives you a competitive edge in a rapidly evolving media landscape. By choosing a second major from journalism, media and communication industries, or promotional communication, you’ll graduate with a broader skill set that spans content creation, audience engagement, and strategic storytelling.
Or you might like to add minors such as strategic communications, news and factual media, or social media strategy to specialise in areas that complement journalism. These options allow you to tailor your degree to your interests and career goals, opening pathways into content creation, and digital strategy.
The screen industries major covers everything from industry structures and evolving audience dynamics to the essentials of screen production and project management, making it ideal for those aiming for careers beyond traditional production roles. This major will suit students interested in screen development, media distribution, marketing, audience research, policy and leadership.
With modern communications roles and career paths growing by the day, the demand is there for graduates with any number of specialisations and skill sets. To help support a diverse, strong cohort of graduates with unique capabilities, QUT lets you tailor your communication degree to suit your interests.
